Located fringing the paddy fields of Pittugala, a suburb of Colombo and in close proximity to the southern expressway, is the recently completed home of contemporary Sri Lankan artist JC Ratnayake and his printmaker wife Thanuja . The 13.9 perch (3700sqft ) site, that sloped towards the paddy .The design was an outcome of the clients' lifestyle as an artists , as well as the small construction budget of SLR 10 million ( approx. 65,000 USD) which was gathered incrementally over a 3 year span . This retreat space is the residence, work space as well as gallery space of the artist couple.
The entire house is passively ventilated. It is buffered from the noises of the neighbourhood and highway, by surrounding paddy and the lush internal gardens with create the feeling of a private oasis inside. The architecture aims to be a backdrop to the artist’s simple lifestyle, providing them with a close connection to the natural environment.
