Oculus Staff Quarters in Jaffna
Oculus is a staff and guest quarters of the Jaffna Wind Power Park, which is located close to a lagoon and mud flat landscape of the Northern Sri Lankan town. It's a part of an axis/spine of 16 wind turbines. The wind power park is cultivated as a seasonal lagoon landscape that floods during three months of the year, with a distinctive ecosystem that attracts a variety of birds. It is a simple plan built with a low budget that was designed without harming the surrounding vegetation. The ground floor consists of an open living area, dining area, kitchen, caretaker's quarters and shallow pond with a sculptural spiral staircase leading to the upper floor. The staircase has a wind turbine as a backdrop, with an ossified look to blend into the scrubland mudflat environment. The shallow pond with varying water depths at the core of the building captures the reflection of the wind turbine during various times of the day acts as the eye of the oculus. The upper floor consists of a living area, two rooms for staff and two rooms for guests.
